Disturbed released "Stricken" on July 25, 2005, as the second single from their third studio album, Ten Thousand Fists. By then the Chicago band had settled into a lineup of guitarist Dan Donegan, drummer Mike Wengren, vocalist David Draiman, and bassist John Moyer, the last of whom had joined the previous year. The track marked one of the first times the band included a guitar solo in one of its songs.
The single found a wide audience. It was certified 3× platinum in the United States by the RIAA on March 6, 2025, for selling 3,000,000 copies, and it also earned 2× platinum status in Canada, platinum in both Australia and New Zealand, and silver in the United Kingdom. In 2006 it was used as the official theme for WWE's pay-per-view event New Year's Revolution.
The music video was filmed in an abandoned hospital that had also appeared in scenes from the 1984 horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Set in an abandoned asylum, the video follows a man involved with two women at the same time. His original girlfriend is shown upset and screaming, while the other woman is shown having sexual intercourse with him. The man shows no emotion to the very end, his hands on his face. Throughout the clip, Disturbed plays in the background while random objects are dropped or thrown.
