"Temperature" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2006, giving Jamaican musician Sean Paul his third US chart-topping single. The track, released in December 2005 as the second US single and third worldwide single from his album The Trinity, sold 1,533,362 digital copies in the United States throughout 2006. It also reached the top 10 in Canada and France, and the top 20 in Australia and the United Kingdom. It is widely regarded as Paul's signature song.
The song was built on the dancehall riddim "Applause" and produced by Rohan "Snowcone" Fuller. Two official versions exist, differing only in their rhythm. Critics received it positively.
The music video was directed by Little X and has surpassed 500 million views on YouTube. It follows the seasons. Paul raps with female backup dancers, first among blowing leaves in an autumn sequence, then in snow with a freezing thermometer for winter. The third sequence brings rain and spring, and the last shows Paul in a tanning salon squirting sunscreen for summer, with evident sexual innuendo in the squirting of the lotion. The video closes with Paul sitting in a Chrysler 300 LX at an import tuner meet, holding a dance off in a warehouse while rapping the beginning of "Breakout". The meet is then busted by a Toronto Metropolitan Police officer in a peculiarly long phased out vehicle.
