You're Still the One

At the 41st Annual Grammy Awards in 1999, "You're Still the One" by Shania Twain won two trophies, taking home Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance while also earning nominations for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The recognition capped a crossover run that had seen the single, released by Mercury Records to U.S. pop radio on January 13, 1998, peak at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and reach number one in Australia. It was later serviced to American country stations on February 13 of that year as the third single from her album Come On Over.

Twain wrote the song with her then-husband and producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange in response to criticism of their marriage. Industry observers had questioned the relationship, pointing to their different cultural backgrounds and the 17-year age gap between them, and some speculated that Lange was controlling her career. Twain described the finished track as her own personal victory song, a celebration of a marriage that had survived the odds. She began composing it on guitar in an introspective mood, and Lange contributed the counter-melody that became its title line.

Recorded at Masterfonics Tracking Room in Nashville and mixed by Mike Shipley, the country pop ballad was built around piano, with guitar, organ, and mandolin supporting it, and a pedal steel solo by Bruce Bouton on the bridge. The music video, directed by David Hogan, earned a nomination for Best Female Video at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, making Twain the first female country artist nominated in that ceremony's history.
