Wes Borland, then known for his work with Limp Bizkit, played the guitar part on "Born Too Slow." The track also featured vocals from John Garcia, the lead singer of Kyuss, and became the first single from the Crystal Method's third studio album, Legion of Boom. The electronic act, formed in Las Vegas by Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan in 1993, had already built a reputation through their platinum-certified debut Vegas and its follow-up Tweekend.
Before its single release in 2003, the song appeared on EA's Need for Speed: Underground that same year. It later turned up in Gran Turismo 4 and Donkey Konga 2, and in 2006 it featured in the film Annapolis.
The music video was directed by Gore Verbinski, whose films included The Mexican, The Ring, and the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Verbinski liked the song so much that he asked the Crystal Method if he could direct the video himself. Borland made a cameo appearance as a man using a pay phone. Fitness expert Billy Blanks Jr. starred as the silver man, while Kirkland and Jordan appeared as the two men standing in line after the silver man got his drink.
