The Crystal Method built "Trip Like I Do" around a voice mail left by a friend of Scott Kirkland. The friend, while using ecstasy, kept leaving messages telling Kirkland that he wished Kirkland could trip the way he did. That phrase gave the song its title and its hook. It appeared on Vegas, the debut album Kirkland made with Ken Jordan, the duo he had formed in Las Vegas in 1993.
In 1997 the track was reworked as "(Can't You) Trip Like I Do" for the film adaptation of the Spawn comic book series. Filter's Richard Patrick co-wrote the new version and Brian Liesegang co-produced it, and both men appeared in the song's video. The reworked track opened Spawn: The Album and played over the end credits of the film.
The song found a second life in trailers. It was used for the theatrical trailer of The Matrix, for promotional trailers for the Enter the Matrix video game, and for the reveal trailer of Spider-Man in 2002. Despite that exposure, it never appeared in The Matrix itself or on that film's soundtrack. Vegas, the album the original version came from, went platinum in 2007.
