The man at the center of "Dr. Feelgood" is a drug dealer, and the Mötley Crüe song puts him in the middle of the Sunset Strip scene in Los Angeles. The track brought a funk rock groove and more sophisticated lyrics than the straightforward riffing of their earlier records.
Mötley Crüe had formed in Hollywood, California, in 1981, when bassist Nikki Sixx and drummer Tommy Lee were joined almost at once by guitarist Mick Mars and lead vocalist Vince Neil. "Dr. Feelgood" was released in 1989 as the first single from their fifth studio album of the same name. It became their first American Top Ten hit, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 28, 1989, still their highest-ranked single. In November 1989 the RIAA certified it Gold for more than 500,000 units shipped in the United States, their only gold single there.
The album is the only Mötley Crüe studio album to reach number one.
Dr. Feelgood runs at 110 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.18 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 545 ms. It is in D major, Camelot 10B, which shares its notes with B minor and mixes cleanly with G major and A major.
