Nikki Sixx wrote "Kickstart My Heart" on acoustic guitar during the sessions for Mötley Crüe's 1989 album Dr. Feelgood. When the group's former manager read the lyric, he encouraged a reluctant Sixx to share it with the band, and the track came together quickly. The title refers to an incident in which a paramedic was said to have injected Sixx's heart with adrenaline to revive him after a drug overdose, though Guns N' Roses drummer Steven Adler claimed no injection took place, saying he dragged Sixx into a cold shower before paramedics arrived and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The song was released as the album's second single in 1989 and reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States in early 1990. Dr. Feelgood itself became Mötley Crüe's only studio album to reach number one on the Billboard 200.
A music video was filmed live at the Whisky a Go Go on October 5, 1989, during a warmup gig for the Dr. Feelgood tour. The band was billed as the Foreskins for the show, and comedian Sam Kinison made a cameo appearance as the limousine driver dropping them off at the club.
