At the 46th Annual Grammy Awards, "Go with the Flow" by Queens of the Stone Age was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance. It had come out as a single from Songs for the Deaf on April 7, 2003, and it was the only single from that album without Dave Grohl on drums. Gene Trautmann, who left the band during the recording of the album, played on it instead.
The video, made in England by Shynola, won Best Special Effects at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards and was also nominated for Best Art Direction and Breakthrough Video. Filmed in black, white and red, it shows the band performing on the back of a Chevrolet pickup truck driving down a desert highway. It carries sexual imagery, including two colliding cars and a bident like the one on the album cover.
The single came in several editions. The UK CD 2 added live recordings of "Regular John" and "Do It Again" from the Melkweg in Amsterdam on June 24, 2002. The Australian special edition had a live "Avon" from The Mean Fiddler in London, plus a Lavelle remix of "No One Knows". The UK 12-inch was pressed on clear vinyl with an UNKLE reconstruction of the same song.
Go With the Flow runs at 159 BPM, the tempo of hard techno, punk and fast rock. In classical terms it sits in vivace territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 1.51 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 377 ms. It is in E minor, Camelot 9A, which shares its notes with G major and mixes cleanly with A minor and B minor.
