Paco de Lucía, the flamenco guitarist, played on "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?", a ballad Bryan Adams recorded for the 1995 film Don Juan DeMarco, starring Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp and Faye Dunaway. Adams wrote the song with Michael Kamen and Robert John "Mutt" Lange, and the melody runs through the film as a musical motif. It appears three times in the movie, twice performed by other artists in Spanish, before Adams sings it himself over the closing credits.
The Adams version, featuring Paco de Lucía, appeared on the soundtrack album and later on his seventh studio album, 18 til I Die, released more than a year afterward. The song spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the songwriting team its third chart-topper in the United States. It also reached number one in Canada, Australia, Austria, and Switzerland, hit the top five in ten other countries including France and the United Kingdom, and placed in the top ten in four more.
Anton Corbijn directed the music video, which was filmed at Casa los Pavos Reales in Málaga, Spain, and starred Cecilie Thomsen and Amira Casar. It was released in May 1995. At the 68th Academy Awards, the song was nominated for Best Original Song but lost to "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas. In 2022, Adams released a rerecording labeled "Classic Version", with a video shot in Vigo, Spain, that July.
