Eric Kagna, a Vancouver singer and songwriter, wrote the song that became "Straight From the Heart," with Bryan Adams contributing the instrumental bridge. The official credit was split equally between the two. Ian Lloyd recorded it first, putting the song on his 1980 album Third Wave Civilization.
Other versions followed. Jon English, an Australian singer, recorded it for his 1981 album In Roads, and his version peaked at number 72 in Australia. In November 1982, the teen band Rosetta Stone issued the song as a single. Adams then released his own version in February 1983 as the lead single from his third studio album, Cuts Like a Knife.
