In February 2014, "Need You Tonight" came back. After Channel 7 aired the mini-series INXS: Never Tear Us Apart, the song charted again in Australia on download sales and reached No. 28 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The song had first come out in 1987 as the lead single from the band's sixth album, Kick.
The first time round it reached number three in Australia and number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. It was the only US number one INXS ever had. It also made the top five in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the UK.
Richard Lowenstein directed the video, titled "Need You Tonight / Mediate". It merged two songs from the album. He said he made the effects by cutting up 35mm film, photocopying the frames and layering them back over the footage. In the "Mediate" section the band flips cue cards, and Kirk Pengilly starts a sax solo when one reads "Sax Solo". The video won five MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year in 1988.
Need You Tonight runs at 108 BPM, the tempo of mid-tempo pop, dancehall and indie. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.22 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 556 ms. It is in B minor, Camelot 10A, which shares its notes with D major and mixes cleanly with E minor and F# minor.
