Andrew Farriss composed the music for "New Sensation" and Michael Hutchence wrote the lyrics, about a partying lifestyle. The first line, "Live, baby, live", later gave its name to the band's 1991 release Live Baby Live. Kirk Pengilly played the sax solo.
It was the third single from Kick, and the second in the UK. It came out in the UK on December 29, 1987 and worldwide the following year. It reached No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100, No. 9 in Australia, No. 25 in the UK and No. 1 in Canada.
Richard Lowenstein directed the video, which was shot on the roof of Municipal House in Prague. INXS played the song at the 2010 AFL Grand Final with J.D. Fortune, along with "Suicide Blonde". It was also the first track ever performed at the London Astoria. The US 7-inch paired it with "Guns in the Sky" in a Kookaburra mix, and the UK 7-inch carried "Do Wot You Do" on the back. In 2018 it came in at number 44 on Triple M's list of the most Australian songs of all time.
New Sensation runs at 115 BPM, the tempo of pop, funk and disco-leaning dance. In classical terms it sits in moderato territory. A bar of 4/4 lasts 2.09 seconds, and a quarter-note delay is 522 ms. It is in E major, Camelot 12B, which shares its notes with C# minor and mixes cleanly with A major and B major.
